interstate long distance call
An interstate long distance phone call which originates in one state and terminates in a different state.
intrastate long distance call
An intrastate long distance phone call which takes place within one state while originating and terminating in separate local service areas.
local toll calls
Local toll calls are within the same local service area, but they fall in the geographic area between a regular local calling area and a long distance calling area. Local toll areas vary by state and city.
TPV
(Third Party Verification) Before a customer's long distance carrier can be changed, the FCC requires that the new carrier verify that the customer has authorized the change. One method allowed by the FCC is verification through an independent third party verification company.
USF
(universal service fund) Federal law requires long distance service providers to contribute to the USF. This fund offers support to telecommunications carriers in rural and high-cost areas, low-income consumers, and schools, libraries and rural health care providers.
